The passage under the Chkalov staircase in Nizhny Novgorod may be completely closed.

      On August 28, 2026, at 14:39 Society In Nizhny Novgorod, traffic organization schemes have been developed in the area of the Chkalov Stairs, which provide for the complete closure of the passage underneath it. This was reported by the NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" in the Department of Transport and Road Economy. In case these measures are implemented, a detour is planned to be organized near the boat "Hero". In addition, a traffic light is expected to be installed in this area.

      "The timelines for the implementation of the measures are being determined," the department noted.

      The arch's vault is periodically damaged by trucks. One such incident occurred in July 2026 when a truck got stuck in the archway. As a result, plaster fell off the vault, and a noticeable dent appeared on the arch. Later, the NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" editorial team found out that decorative repairs of the vault are scheduled to begin on August 31. During the work, the passage under the stairs will be closed.
