Residents of Nizhny Novgorod were told how to choose the right sweet New Year's gift

26 December 2025 11:12 Society. The regional office of Rospotrebnadzor reminded residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region about the rules for choosing safe sweet gifts for children for the New Year. The agency’s specialists emphasized that it is important to consider not only taste but also product quality.

It is recommended to buy New Year’s gifts exclusively at official retail outlets — shops, supermarkets and certified markets. Purchasing sweets from street vendors or dubious places can lead to buying poor-quality or expired products.

Specialists advise carefully studying the information on the packaging when choosing a gift. Mandatory data include:

      - the full name of the set,

      - a detailed list of the products included,

      - the manufacturing date and shelf life (determined by the most perishable component),

      - storage conditions,

      - information about the manufacturer or importer,

      - nutritional value,

      - information on the presence of GMOs,

      - the mark authorizing circulation on the market of the Customs Union member states.

At the buyer’s request, the seller is obliged to provide documents confirming the quality and safety of the products — declarations of conformity and invoices.

Rospotrebnadzor recommends paying special attention to the ingredients. Preference should be given to chocolate, jelly, wafer candies, zephyr, pastila, marmalade, galette biscuits and gingerbread. The use of natural colorings and flavorings is permissible.

At the same time, it is not recommended to include in children’s gifts items containing alcohol, caramel and hard candies, products with numerous food additives (preservatives, synthetic colorants, flavor enhancers, hydrogenated fats), as well as strong allergens — peanuts and apricot kernels.

One of the safest options, specialists say, is to assemble the gift yourself from trusted sweets that the child likes. Such a set can be attractively packaged.

After purchase, it is important to follow the storage conditions indicated on the packaging — most often a cool, dry place.

Earlier, Elena Kochuro, deputy head of the department of food hygiene supervision of Rospotrebnadzor for the Nizhny Novgorod region, explained how to correctly choose caviar for the New Year’s table, and how long Olivier salad and other dishes can be stored.
