Former head of Nizhny Novgorod Oleg Sorokin has filed an appeal against the court’s refusal to grant him parole, reports "Kommersant-Privolzhye".
Recall that Sorokin is serving a ten-year term in a high-security colony in Omsk. He was arrested in December 2017 while serving as deputy chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. In 2019 the court found him guilty of receiving a bribe on an especially large scale and of complicity in the kidnapping of a person. He has already spent eight years behind bars and in October filed an application for early release. However, the court did not grant the former official’s petition.
The convict disagreed with this decision and his lawyers prepared an appeal. The case materials are expected to be submitted for consideration by the Omsk Regional Court on November 26. The victim in the case, Alexander Novoselov, continues to oppose Sorokin’s early release.
Additionally, more than 2.5 billion rubles were previously recovered from former head Sorokin and his ex-wife for violations of anti-corruption legislation. Another prosecutor’s suit seeking to recover more than 2 billion rubles from the former married couple has begun being considered by a court in Semenov.
