Road services in Nizhny Novgorod are operating 24/7 due to temperature swings.

      Road service crews in Nizhny Novgorod continue to operate around the clock due to frequent temperature fluctuations.

      The city transport department reported that ahead of expected freezes main roads are treated with anti-icing materials, and during thaws and rains accumulated water is pumped off the streets. Earlier, at the first expanded meeting of the snow removal headquarters this season, Mayor Yuri Shalabaev instructed that road machinery be put on duty and that crews operate promptly taking weather changes into account.

      Deputy Director of the City Department of Transport and Road Management Vadim Nanaev noted that operations are now organized on a round-the-clock basis and the condition of the road surface is constantly monitored. Depending on weather conditions, specialists carry out anti-icing treatments and pump water from the most problematic sections. According to him, special emphasis is placed on maintaining potentially dangerous areas — bridges, descents, key thoroughfares with heavy public transport traffic, as well as stops and pedestrian crossings.

      On-duty crews have been formed in every district of the city and are on shift 24 hours a day. Nanaev recalled that since the end of last week more than 80 combined road machines loaded with anti-icing materials have been on duty and have been dispatched to treat roads ahead of the forecasted cold snap, acting preventively to avoid ice. When the temperature rises above zero again and rain begins, workers switch to pumping water from the streets.

      Working under constant temperature fluctuations requires increased vigilance, as precipitation can freeze quickly and turn into an ice crust.

      Duty foreman of MBU "RED" Andrey Koluger said that the weather has been unpredictable: one day there was frost, and the next day it is raining. He stressed that because of such abrupt changes the crews remain on constant duty and are ready at any moment to deploy the necessary equipment to the streets, making decisions based on the current situation.

      Combined road machine driver Vladimir Kostin noted that one of the crews' main tasks now is to prevent the formation of ice. KDM driver Pavel Tarakanov added that road services pay attention primarily to routes used by public transport. According to him, timely treatment and clearing of roads helps prevent traffic jams and makes travel along the city's streets more comfortable for all road users.

      It was reported that this winter more than a thousand workers will be clearing snow in Nizhny Novgorod and Kstovo.
