      State Duma deputy and former mayor of Nizhny Novgorod Vadim Bulavinov said that the city’s public transport problem can only be solved by increasing drivers’ pay. He shared his thoughts on the transport situation at a meeting with journalists on September 29, the correspondent of NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" reports.

      He admitted that he himself does not use public transport, but receives complaints from residents about route cancellations and a shortage of drivers.

      "The situation is rather sad. They seem to be buying equipment, but the work is very hard; you have to come to the depot at four in the morning. Today few are willing to work for the money that is offered. Especially young people. You can ride a bicycle and deliver food, earning three times more than a bus driver. It’s a paradox, but people look for where it’s better," he said.

      The politician sees a pay raise as the only solution to the situation.

      According to him, the staff shortage is observed not only in the transport sector but also at many industrial enterprises.

      Earlier it was reported that nearly 1,500 fare-dodgers have been caught in Nizhny Novgorod transport since the beginning of the year.
