Residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region observed a rare natural phenomenon on the evening of September 29 — the northern lights. The photos were shared by the G.M. Grechko Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium on social media.

"It looks like two pale greenish bands above the northern horizon. The color appears clearly on the camera," noted planetarium lecturer Nikolay Lapin.

The northern lights were recorded not only in Nizhny Novgorod itself but also in a number of districts of the region, including Borsky, Semenovsky and Voskresensky. The unusual glow was also noticed by staff of the Kerzhensky Nature Reserve. Even in the blurry shots taken at night, it is clearly visible how the forest is illuminated by green light.

As the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) explained earlier, a powerful solar flare may have caused the aurora. The increase in solar activity began on Friday evening, which triggered this atmospheric phenomenon.

It was previously reported that strong geomagnetic storms will affect Nizhny Novgorod residents in the first half of October.
