IncidentsA court in the Nizhny Novgorod region found the former head of a correctional colony guilty of violating occupational safety regulations that resulted in a person's death. The convicted man received a suspended sentence.

The investigation found that in October 2024 one of the inmates was performing work on the colony's agricultural plot. While inside a disused building, parts of the roof and a wall collapsed on him. The man sustained severe injuries and later died in hospital.

The investigation showed that the former head of the facility committed gross violations. He did not ensure control over the technical condition of the structure, and he ordered work to be carried out in the dangerous building without having the necessary documents confirming its safety.

The court found him guilty under Part 2 of Article 143 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — violation of occupational safety requirements that negligently caused a person's death.

As a result, the former head was sentenced to two years' imprisonment suspended with a two-year probationary period. He was also barred from holding public office for one and a half years.

Earlier it was reported that an employee of the Nizhny Novgorod pre-trial detention center (SIZO) was sentenced to four years in prison for bribery.
