More than 6,800 children spent this summer at municipal wellness camps in Nizhny Novgorod.

More than 6,800 children spent their summer this year at municipal health camps in Nizhny Novgorod. As the city Department of Social Policy reported, 22 sessions were held for 3,555 children at five country camps and recreation and wellness bases under the municipal center “Nadezhda.” These are the tourist base “Olympic Hopes” on the shore of the Gorky Sea in the Gorodets municipal district; the “Green Oaks” camp in the Gorokhovetsky District of Vladimir Region; the “Sputnik” camp in the Semenovsky urban district; and the “Mayak” camp and the military-patriotic camp “I Want to Become a Paratrooper” in the Dalnekonstantinovsky municipal district of Nizhny Novgorod Region.

According to Galina Gurenko, director of the Department of Social Policy, the sessions at the camps were full and interesting. “All municipal camps are located in environmentally clean areas. Many children came to us not for the first time. As a good tradition, an international session was held at our flagship camp ‘I Want to Become a Paratrooper’; at ‘Olympic Hopes’ there was a unique children’s cynological gathering ‘Tailed Holidays’; and at ‘Green Oaks’ there was a specialized Orthodox session that for the first time brought together children with disabilities and their peers. In addition, this year the ‘Mayak’ camp celebrated its 70th anniversary. All the children who visited our camps had a good rest, recharged their batteries and gained strength for the new school year. We will be glad to see the children again in our camps next summer,” said Galina Gurenko.

Department specialists noted that a large amount of work on patriotic education of children was carried out during the summer. All camps held events timed to the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. A full program was developed for each camp. These included themed concerts, campaigns, literary salons, quizzes and the military-sports game “Zarnitsa.” Teachers from the city Center for Military-Patriotic Education named after Maxim Nastin conducted training master classes for children on operating UAVs. In addition, each camp organized specialized military-patriotic clubs staffed by volunteers who were pupils of the center and had completed the “School of Junior Commanders.”

Nikolai Bankov, director of the municipal center “Nadezhda,” recalled that prior to the start of the summer wellness campaign, thanks to the support of the city head Yuri Shalabayev, work was carried out to improve the material and technical base of all camps. “This year, thanks to additional funding, we built four new dormitory buildings at ‘Olympic Hopes.’ The capacity of the recreation base increased by 48 places, and over the summer 200 more children rested there than in 2024. At the ‘Green Oaks’ camp the dining hall underwent a major overhaul and was additionally equipped with technological equipment. At ‘Mayak’ and at the military-patriotic camp ‘I Want to Become a Paratrooper’ new covered sports grounds were installed where children can play sports and hold cultural events in any weather,” noted Nikolai Bankov.

As reported by the Nizhny Novgorod Department of Education, 14 sessions for 3,333 children were held in the four suburban camps subordinate to it. According to specialists, for the first time the Alexandrovka camp, located in the urban district of the town of Bor, Nizhny Novgorod Region, held a natural science–oriented session “EKORASA,” organized by the city school quantorium at MBOU School No. 9. Gifted children from seven districts of the city participated in the session.

The traditional city sessions “Leader” and “Pioneer Dawn” took place at the “Zvezdochka” camp in the Gorodets municipal district, gathering the most active children of Nizhny Novgorod — leaders and activists of public associations, participants in city gatherings, competitions, campaigns and projects.

At the “Lesnoy” camp, located in the Chkalovsk urban district, a museum devoted to the history of children’s recreation, the history of the Great Patriotic War and the events of the special military operation operated throughout the session. The camp also hosted preschool-age children (from 3 to 7 years old), for whom unique off-site “Children’s Dachas” were organized. Qualified preschool teachers worked with them (educators, additional education teachers, music leaders and physical education instructors).

At the “Chaika” camp, located in the resort settlement Zeleny Gorod, active cooperation was organized during the session with the Public Council under the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for Nizhny Novgorod Region.

“It is especially important that in the Year of Children’s Recreation, children in all camps learned about the history of children’s recreation in Russia,” stressed the Department of Education.

Specialists also noted that the material base of all municipal suburban camps subordinate to the Department of Education was updated according to needs: in some places food service units were renovated, dormitory buildings were insulated and repainted, new sports grounds were equipped, and in several others electrical wiring, furniture and window units were replaced, and lighting poles and outdoor lamps were added.

“Rest at school-based day camps also proved to be in high demand. In 199 day camps 23,444 children rested, in 27 labor-and-rest camps — 979 kids. Also, the ‘Courtyard Practice’ project was implemented on the city territory, covering 44 courtyard playgrounds and attracting 4,775 children,” the specialists added.

Following the summer wellness campaign, a city training seminar for heads and staff of wellness institutions will be held at the city resource center for organizing summer recreation, which from 2025 will be the MBU DO DOOC “Lesnoy.”
