      A new art object — the letter "Ы" — has appeared in the city of Vyksa, created as part of the cultural project "Urban Alphabet." This symbol is directly linked to the city's name and refers to its linguistic roots, the Institute for the Development of Urban Environment of the Nizhny Novgorod Region reported.

      In Old Slavic writing the letter "ery" (as "Ы" was formerly called) arose from a combination of the signs "Ь" or "Ъ" with the symbol "И" or "І". Thus, its name comes from the merging of "er" ("Ъ") and "И".

      The front of the installation is decorated with a plant ornament characteristic of Old Russian book miniatures. On the reverse side a unicorn is depicted — a mythical creature featured on Vyksa's coat of arms and symbolizing the city's identity.

      The "Urban Alphabet" project is aimed at popularizing the history of Russian writing and its contemporary artistic reinterpretation.

      Previously, nine letters of the Slavic alphabet have already been installed as part of the project.
