Beeline increases the capacity of its backbone network on the large European ring more than 6,000 km long. The upgrade, among other localities, affected towns and settlements in the Nizhny Novgorod region – Nizhny Novgorod and Lyskovo, Kudma in the Bogorodsky district.
The changes became possible thanks to the launch of additional channels using DWDM* technology. It allows a single optical cable to support several services at once: mobile and home internet, voice traffic and digital TV. As a result, network capacity will more than double, and services will become more reliable for nearly 20 million residents in 41 cities and localities across Russia.
In particular, the launch of new DWDM lines makes it possible to distribute traffic more efficiently on 4G** networks that customers use for high-speed internet access. For example, on the northern route of the ring (Moscow – Samara) the new capacity has already been put into operation. Traffic will be launched on the southern line (Rostov-on-Don – Saratov) in the near future.
About 250 billion gigabytes of data pass through the large European ring daily, equivalent to watching 25 billion movies in high quality. Thanks to the network upgrade, local residents can use familiar online services at comfortable speeds: instantly upload videos or voice messages in messengers, watch films, listen to their favorite music online or stream while gaming.
The backbone network’s capacity was increased by modernizing 44 communication nodes and switching to domestic equipment. This created conditions for improved customer service quality and also reduced the load on the network infrastructure.
In addition to the work already done, Beeline plans to expand the network along the chord route Moscow – Ryazan – Penza – Saransk – Samara. On this section network capacity will triple. This will additionally ensure customers fast and reliable access to online services for 10–15 years.
"The large European ring is a crucial element of Beeline’s transport network, covering the densely populated part of Russia. Beeline is timely and gradually expanding capacity to accommodate traffic growth: it is modernizing and launching new lines on modern DWDM equipment. This increases the quality and reliability of the services we provide to our customers," commented Sergey Lyadovoy, Director of Multiservice Network Development at Beeline.
* DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) – a dense spectral multiplexing technology that allows the transmission of many independent information streams (internet traffic, voice calls, video signals, corporate network data and multimedia) over a single optical fiber by separating signals by wavelength.
** 4G – fourth-generation mobile communication.
The Big European Ring is a backbone network more than 6,000 km long in the European, central and southern parts of Russia. The network infrastructure includes the northern line (Moscow – Nizhny Novgorod – Samara – Ufa), the southern line (Rostov-on-Don – Tikhoretsk – Volgograd – Saratov), as well as the chord route (Moscow – Ryazan – Penza – Saransk – Samara).
