About the situation with fires

      ATTENTION RESIDENTS AND GUESTS OF THE DISTRICT! The Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) for the Nizhny Novgorod Region reports that since the beginning of 2025, 2,412 fires have been registered in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, resulting in 103 deaths and 102 injuries. Despite an overall decrease in the number of fires by 0.8% or 20 cases (same period last year (hereinafter – SPLY) – 2,432), the number of fatalities in those fires increased by 5% or 5 people (SPLY – 98). The majority of fires (47%) and of fire-related fatalities (93%) occur in the residential sector. The predominant causes of fires are violations of rules for the operation of electrical equipment (635 cases or 55% of the total) and stove heating (347 cases or 30%), as well as careless handling of fire (70 cases or 6%). The most unfavorable situation in terms of fires and fatalities occurred in the Avtozavodsky District of Nizhny Novgorod (96 fires, up 4% (SPLY – 92), 6 fatalities, increased threefold (SPLY – 2)), the Kulebaki urban district (40 fires, +73% (SPLY – 23), 3 fatalities, increased threefold (SPLY – 1)), the Bor municipal district (117 fires, +18% (SPLY – 99), 12 fatalities, +20% (SPLY – 10)), Pochinkovsky (42 fires, +31% (SPLY – 32), 4 fatalities, increased fourfold (SPLY – 1)) and Bogorodsky (76 fires, +3% (SPLY – 72), 7 fatalities, increased twofold (SPLY – 3)). In addition, since the beginning of the current year, 12 fires with multiple fatalities, resulting in 26 deaths, have been registered in the region. Child fatalities are of particular concern. This year, 4 children have already died in fires in the region (SPLY – 9). It should be noted that just over the past weekend (2–3 August 2025) there were 2 fires in which children died. On 2 August 2025, due to violation of the rules for installation and operation of electrical equipment, a fire occurred in a private residential house in the settlement of Pyra, Dzerzhinsk urban district, resulting in the deaths of 2 people, including a child born in 2022. From the circumstances of the incident it was established that on the night before the fire the family returned from guests and went to rest at approximately 4:00 a.m. on 2 August 2025. Early in the morning (around 6–7 a.m.) the head of the household left home on errands. Around midday an electrical wiring malfunction occurred in a junction box in the corridor of the house. As a result of heavy smoke, rapid fire spread due to combustible interior finishes, and the occupants being asleep, the mother (born 1999) and the child (born 2022) were unable to be saved. On 3 August 2025, due to a malfunction of vehicle units and mechanisms, a fire occurred in a garage with subsequent spread of the fire to a two-apartment residential house in the city of Bor, resulting in the death of a child born in 2019. At the time of the fire (around 1:30 a.m.) there were 6 people in the house, including 4 children, who had returned the previous evening from a vacation in southern Russia and gone to sleep. According to the head of the household’s statements, at night he heard a bang in the garage. Entering the garage he saw open flames in the engine compartment of his car. Attempting to extinguish the fire, he lost valuable time notifying family members. Ultimately unable to control the flames, he left the garage and went to the bedrooms to alert the household. In a state of panic people literally jumped out of second-floor windows, resulting in 4 people sustaining injuries of varying severity, including severe fractures of limbs. Once outside, they remembered that the youngest daughter (born 2019) remained in the house. The father attempted to return to the house, but it was already impossible to do so and he failed to save his daughter. In addition, in the last days of July 2025, 4 children died on bodies of water in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. These incidents were recorded in the village of Zubanikha, Dalnekonstantinovsky municipal district; the village of Alamasovo and the urban-type settlement of Voznesenskoye, Voznesensky municipal district; and in the city of Vyksa, Nizhny Novgorod Region. Analysis of these incidents indicates that the main causes of death are swimming in non-equipped (unauthorized) locations, violation of water safety requirements, and lack of adequate parental supervision of children.
