Since the evening of August 11, residents of Nizhny Novgorod have filed about 150 complaints about an unpleasant odor. Appeals were submitted via the website zhaloba42.ru and were also posted on social networks.

Nizhny Novgorod residents noted in their appeals that the smell was again noticeable in various parts of the city, including Verkhniye Pechery, Kuznechikha, Kazan Highway, Shcherbinki and Meshchera.

Recall that residents periodically complain about an unpleasant sewage smell that is felt in several districts of Nizhny Novgorod.

Earlier, city authorities reported that they had developed a package of measures to reduce and prevent the occurrence of unpleasant odors in Nizhny Novgorod. As part of these measures, control was strengthened over the activities of the so‑called "black" cesspool operators. Inspections of sewage pumping stations and pipelines were also carried out, and identified faults were fixed.

Residents' complaints about a persistent unpleasant odor have repeatedly reached the head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin. He ordered a report on the progress of the criminal investigation related to possible violations of environmental legislation in the Verkhniye Pechery area.

In addition, the regional Ministry of Ecology reported that because of the large number of appeals from citizens, the city now monitors air quality around the clock. For this purpose, 80 automatic stations were purchased that record levels of pollutants in the air. Afterwards, a modern gas analyzer was purchased to monitor ambient air quality in Nizhny Novgorod.

At the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station a special "wet barrier" system was even installed, which helps reduce odors and prevent their spread into the air. At the same time, Rosprirodnadzor organized an unscheduled inspection of the Nizhny Novgorod Aeration Station.

In early August, Nizhny Novgorod residents created a petition because of the stench in the city. It has so far been signed by more than 6,000 people.
