The famous Nizhny Novgorod retro train was named "Muromets."

On August 1, 2025, at 16:51 [157], Society The new retro train of the Gorky Railway is now named "Muromets" — this name was chosen by participants in the final stage of the national voting. The train, led by a 9P №18430 steam locomotive, runs on a route between Nizhny Novgorod-Moskovsky and Nizhny Novgorod-Sortirovochny stations. The name "Muromets" received an overwhelming majority of votes — 76% of followers of the "ProGZhD" Telegram channel voted for it. This allowed it to confidently surpass six other proposed options. Participants explained this decision by their desire to emphasize the historical connection with the city of Murom, where in 1951 this locomotive was built at the Dzerzhinsky plant. The winner's name was suggested by Irina Toropova. As a token of appreciation, she will receive commemorative gifts from the Gorky Railway. For nearly 30 years — from 1996 to 2024 — this locomotive was on display at the "Locomotives of Russia" project. In 2024, it was sent for a major overhaul, after which railway workers fully restored its technical condition and returned it to operation. Type 9P locomotives were produced from 1935 to 1957 at facilities in Kolomna, Novocherkassk, and Murom. With a power of 320 horsepower, a maximum speed of 35 km/h, and a weight of over 55 tons, they effectively handled shunting operations both on railways and industrial sites. In particular, they were used to supply gondola cars for pouring liquid cast iron. The next retro train trip took place on the eve — July 31. As part of the excursion, children visited the Tsar Pavilion at the Nizhny Novgorod station, where they learned about its architecture and history. At Nizhny Novgorod-Sortirovochny station, students visited the Museum of the History and Development of the GZhD and also the "Locomotives of Russia" site, where they explored the heritage of the Gorky Railway in an interactive format.
