A memorial service was held in Nizhny Novgorod dedicated to Russian soldiers who died during World War I. The commemorative event took place on August 1 in I.P. Kulibin Park. It was exactly 111 years ago that Germany declared war on the Russian Empire.
The memorial service and rally were organized by the regional branch of the Russian Military-Historical Society, the working group dedicated to honoring the memory of Nizhny Novgorod warriors of the Fatherland at the Public Chamber of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, with the participation of the "Vanguard" patriotic education center and the regional branch of the "Victory Volunteers" movement.
At the memorial dedicated to participants of World War I, an honor guard was stationed, provided by representatives of the military-historical club "Nizhny Novgorod Grafa Arakcheeva Cadet Corps." The grand opening of the monument took place on the 110th anniversary of the start of World War I, last year. The monument was installed in the spring. Before the revolution, the site of the park was Petropavlovsk Cemetery, where Nizhny Novgorod residents who died on the fronts of World War I were buried.
After the memorial service, participants paid tribute to the fallen with a minute of silence and laid flowers at the monument.
Aleksei Merkuriev, chairman of the NRO Veterans of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, reminded that about 250,000 people from Nizhny Novgorod left to fight, and approximately 60,000 of them never returned.
"For a long time, World War I was considered a forgotten war. But years passed, and the historical memory of our people began to return. The President of Russia issued a decree to officially remember World War I, and society responded to this call," Merkuriev added.
August 1 was established as an official memorial day—the Day of Remembrance for Russian soldiers who died in World War I (1914–1918)—on December 30, 2012, when the Russian president signed the relevant law.
The working group dedicated to preserving the memory of Nizhny Novgorod warriors of the Fatherland collected materials on World War I over a long period, utilizing state, regional, district, and private archives. After processing the material, 12 original books about this historical event were published.
It was previously reported that the historical and educational project "Heroes of the Rear. Pages of Memory" (12+) had begun work in Nizhny Novgorod.
