Culture and Leisure Archaeologists have discovered a juvenile woolly mammoth's molar in Pochaevsky Ravine. The unique find was made at a depth of about two meters from the modern surface, closer to Rozhdestvenskaya Street. This was announced in the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region's Telegram channel.
"Studies show that mammoths indeed inhabited the Middle Volga region; they began to disappear approximately 11 thousand years ago," wrote the regional head.
Nikitin emphasized that this is not the first similar discovery in the region. In the 1930s, near the foot of the Kremlin in Nizhny Novgorod, remains of a mammoth skull with two upper molar teeth were unearthed.
It is worth noting that extensive work is underway in Pochaevsky Ravine, where a terraced park will be established. In particular, the contractor is working on constructing a pedestrian tunnel. Additionally, a new bridge is being built in Pochaevsky Ravine to replace the demolished emergency one.
Earlier, it was reported that archaeologists found several 19th-century artifacts during the construction of the metro in Nizhny Novgorod. We also detailed the archaeological excavations of the Murom burial site in the Vachsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
