Society Most residents of Nizhny Novgorod choose for themselves what profession to pursue and where to study. Such data are provided by the hh.ru service survey.
Thus, more than half of the respondents (56%) said they made the decision independently. Another third (32%) consulted with relatives. Only 12% had the decision made by relatives.
The younger the participants, the more often they act on their own. Among teenagers under 18, this was 84%, while in the 35 to 44 age group, it was 65%.
The highest independence in choosing a profession was demonstrated by agricultural workers (85%) and those in extractive industries (75%). At the same time, the industries most often consulted with relatives were "Oil and Gas" (41%), housing and utilities (30%), energy (30%), and the financial sector (29%).
Relatives influenced career choices in different ways. For example, 8% of respondents admitted that close ones insisted on a stable and prestigious profession, while 14% entered universities or colleges at the family’s insistence. This was especially mentioned often by workers in the metallurgical industry.
Sometimes parents served as an example — 8% of Nizhny Novgorod residents chose a profession following in their footsteps. Conversely, the same percentage decided not to follow their family’s path due to difficult conditions and low salaries. Another 2% of respondents stated that they were able to change profession thanks to the support of close ones.
Overall, the attitude of families towards career choices is good for most residents of the region. 44% felt supported, 36% had a neutral reaction. Only 2% faced negativity, and 12% had differing opinions within their families.
