Training and educational dormitories opened in the social services house "Nadezhda".
On August 11, 2026, 17:40 Society Two training dormitories for students opened at the social service house for children and young adults "Nadezhda" in Nizhny Novgorod. One of them is specially equipped for the comfortable living of individuals with limited mobility. The second is a pre-training dormitory where students begin to acquire independent living skills before transitioning to the main educational dormitory.
The arrangement of new spaces became possible thanks to the implementation of the Concept of a Unified Model of Assistance to Children in the region. About 8 million rubles were allocated from the regional budget for this project.
The opening of the dormitories was attended by the Minister of Social Development and Family Policy of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Igor Sedykh and the Director of the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization "Resource Center 'Children in the Family'" Svetlana Meller.
"Currently, 176 individuals with developmental disabilities aged 4 to 35 live in the 'Nadezhda' House, more than half of whom are young adults with mental disabilities. Previously, most students saw only one path after graduation - to a psychiatric boarding school. The creation of training dormitories opens up the possibility for them of supported living and independent life," explained Igor Sedykh.
Support for young people with disabilities is one of the areas of work within the framework of the national project "Family." Training dormitories allow young adults with mental disabilities to acquire independence skills in conditions as close to home as possible, with the support of mentors.
Here, they learn to cook, use household appliances, and plan their activities. Mentors explain to students how to shop, navigate the city, use public transport, and manage their personal budget. The first experience of employment is also very important. Thus, the socialization and integration of the residents of the social service house into society gradually occurs.
The Ministry of Social Development and Family Policy of the Nizhny Novgorod Region reported that a three-stage system for preparing students with mental disabilities for the transition to supported living operates in the "Nadezhda" House. At the first stage, they attend classes on social and domestic adaptation in groups. The second stage involves transitioning to the pre-training dormitory "Student House," which accommodates 28 places. Here, students begin to independently organize their daily lives and make decisions in everyday situations.
The third stage is a training dormitory where young adults learn to live autonomously. The first such training space for eight places was opened in 2024. This year, six students from the institution are completing the educational program and will move to a supported living apartment.
For individuals with limited mobility, a two-stage preparation is provided. After completing the social and domestic adaptation course, young adults will immediately move to the training dormitory.
"In the new training dormitory for individuals with limited mobility, the first students have already moved in - six girls who have lived in the boarding system since childhood. They already have a clear schedule, they have started cooking independently, and they plan to completely stop using the cafeteria in the near future," noted Svetlana Meller.
The next stage in the development of the "Nadezhda" House will be the expansion of its infrastructure. By the end of the year, the institution plans to open a department for students with palliative status, a day care center for children with disabilities, and a supported living apartment for six places outside the boarding school territory.
Almost 11.8 million rubles will be allocated from the regional budget for the creation of these three new structural subdivisions within the framework of the Unified Model of Assistance to Children.
