Nizhny Novgorod has become the fastest city in Russia in terms of commuting time to work.

      On August 3, 2026, 17:28 Society Nizhny Novgorod turned out to be the "fastest" city in Russia in terms of the time residents spend commuting to work. This is indicated by the results of the international ranking of the Numbeo platform, which assessed the traffic situation in 305 cities worldwide. In the overall list, Nizhny Novgorod ranked 259th with an index of 27.1. In this ranking, the lower the position, the less time people spend on the road. For comparison, the average figure for Russia was 43.3. The Numbeo traffic index takes into account several indicators: average travel time, satisfaction with trip duration, efficiency of the transport system, and CO₂ emissions volume. The final assessment of each city is based on these factors. According to the platform, the average one-way trip in Nizhny Novgorod takes 27.14 minutes. Additionally, the platform assessed the city's traffic index at 96.27, the time cost index at 35.00, the transport system inefficiency index at 109.61, and the CO₂ emissions index at 2,782.85. A short commute directly affects the quality of life. The less time spent on trips, the more time remains for rest, family, and personal matters. The "slowest" city in the world was Lagos, Nigeria, with an index of 68.3. Following are San Jose, Dhaka, Kolkata, and Colombo. The top ten also included Delhi, Sharjah, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Among Russian cities, the highest index was found in Krasnodar at 51.8. It was followed by Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, and Kaliningrad. Nizhny Novgorod showed the best result among all Russian participants in the study. The "fastest" cities in the world were Croatian Rijeka and Split, Austrian Villach, as well as Serbian Novi Sad and Dutch Groningen.
