Three adults and a child contracted tick-borne encephalitis in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
July 15, 2026 13:45 Society In the Nizhny Novgorod region, a decrease in tick-borne illness cases has been noted in the first six months of 2026. The number of such cases has decreased by 18%, reported Natalia Sadykova, deputy head of the Rospotrebnadzor department for the Nizhny Novgorod region, at a press conference in the Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. According to the specialist, the peak of residents' inquiries usually occurs at the beginning of May; however, in 2026, the maximum number of inquiries was recorded in the last week of May—more than 180 people sought medical help that week. A total of 5,540 cases of inquiries after tick bites have been registered so far. At the same time, residents of the region brought more than 6,000 ticks for research. There are still areas in the Nizhny Novgorod region that are endemic for tick-borne viral encephalitis. The list includes Balakhna, Bogorodsk, Vetluga, Gorodets, Dalenekonstantinov, Kstovo, Lyskov, Navashino, Semyonov, Sosnovka, Tonsha, Uren, and Shakhunya districts, as well as Bor and Dzerzhinsk. This year, positive results for the tick-borne encephalitis virus were obtained from ticks collected in the Shakhunya, Bor, Pavlovo, and Sharanga districts. Currently, four cases of tick-borne encephalitis have been registered, one of which is in a child. Almost 16,000 people have been vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis in the region. Rospotrebnadzor notes that residents of Nizhny Novgorod have become more attentive to prevention—they use repellents, choose more closed clothing, and check for ticks more often after bites. Specialists remind that after a bite, it is important not to throw away the tick but to send it for research. The results of the analysis help doctors decide whether the administration of immunoglobulin against tick-borne encephalitis is necessary. Specialists do not recommend donating blood immediately after a bite—it's impossible to detect the infection in the first few days. The incubation period can last up to 21 days, so after a bite, it is necessary to monitor health. If symptoms such as fever, headache, or other unusual symptoms appear, one should consult a doctor. It was previously reported that the incidence of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in the Nizhny Novgorod region has increased by 12%. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
