July 6, 2026 11:07 Society In every region of Russia, there are not only peculiarities of pronunciation but also unique dialect words. The same expressions sound different in various cities, and sometimes residents of other areas do not understand what is being talked about at all. Alexander Pryanikov, an associate professor of the Department of Russian Language and Literature at the Arzamas branch of NNGU, told the editor-in-chief of MIA "Stationary Press," Alexey Nikonov, about the distinctly Nizhny Novgorod words that are still found in the speech of local residents and are rarely heard outside the region. For example, "blondit" means to stroll idly, to wander or to loiter. And "bepeshka" is the instant noodles familiar to many. The word "viktoriya" in the region refers to strawberries or garden strawberries. If someone is "vypinut," it means to kick out. "Dokhat" means to cough, while "durom" means to do something in large quantities or to a significant extent. The word "zagrubit" is used to mean to make a mistake, exaggerate, or go too far. "Zakhapisty" is a greedy person, and the expression "znamodelo" means "of course" or "naturally." If someone says "zyabko," it means it's cold. The verb "izrastatsya" describes the process when something degenerates, grows, and loses beauty. "Isplevatsya" means to experience or express extreme dissatisfaction. And the phrase "kak beshenaya tarashka" conveys a state of great haste and fuss. The word "nadybat" is used to mean to find or acquire. "Nakryachit" means to deceive or outplay. If something "obrybilos," it means it was obtained or fell into one's hands. "Opoyka" is a drunkard, while "opoyny" means drunk, drinking, or associated with drinkers. "Otkhryapat" means to cut off or take away. "Pesok" in Nizhny Novgorod speech means sugar or granulated sugar. And "pomidora" is used in the feminine form. "Piryat" means to work without a break, "rysachit" means to go back and forth, "smogat" means to cope. "Ubratsya" means not only to tidy up but also to fit in, while "udelat" simply means to do. "Usad" refers to a vegetable garden. The particle "chai" deserves special attention. It expresses hope for something and comes from the obsolete verb "chayat" - to hope or expect. From the same root, the words "chayaniya" and "otchayatsya" originated. Earlier, NNGU scientists talked about how to maintain mental clarity and slow down age-related changes in the brain.
