A list of fragrances from perfumers for protection against mosquitoes has been compiled.

However, some scents can repel them or even irritate their olfactory receptors. Modern fashionistas have found an alternative way to protect themselves: instead of traditional repellents with unpleasant odors, they use perfumes that repel blood-sucking insects.

      Scents that repel mosquitoes

      As biologist Dmitry Safonov told 360.ru, mosquitoes are guided by the smell of carbon dioxide released during breathing, as well as body heat, the smell of sweat, lactic acid, and ammonia. The repellents used to protect against mosquitoes either mask these smells or irritate the insects' olfactory organs. Some perfume compositions can also repel mosquitoes. For example, perfumes and eau de toilettes with vanilla notes are often mentioned in this context.

      Although vanilla itself is not a strong repellent, its combination with other components can create a powerful repelling effect. Here are some essential oils that can help protect against mosquitoes:

      - Clove essential oil (eugenol);

      - Lemongrass;

      - Lemon eucalyptus;

      - Lavender;

      - Cedar;

      - Sage.

      These essential oils are recommended to be reapplied every 1.5-2 hours, as they evaporate quickly.

      Top scents from perfumers for mosquito protection

      Biologists claim that mosquitoes dislike spicy, herbal, and dense scents, as well as sharp, bitter, and camphor-like smells. Perfumer Veronika Bryukhovetskaya shared her recommendations:

      - Vanilla: Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille (thick, sweet, but not cloying), Matiere Premiere Vanilla Powder (pure vanilla composition), or a more affordable option KORRES Vanilla Freesia.

      - Clove: Aromapolis 9 NONUM (pure clove) and surprisingly Dior Fahrenheit, where astringent spice is present at the heart of the fragrance.

      - Lemongrass: Creatively Intentional Lemon Tree (a scent reminiscent of fresh essential oil that mosquitoes cannot stand).

      - Lemon eucalyptus: Bruno Fazzolari Feu Secret or The Perfume Brand No 138 (a cool, green, minty note that repels mosquitoes).

      - Lavender: Jo Malone Lavender & Coriander (very clear lavender) and Ralph Lauren Ralph’s Club Elixir (a dense but recognizable lavender composition).

      Collector and blogger Alina Ryabova compiled her list of scents that repel mosquitoes:

      - Montale Wild Pears — the composition prominently features clove, which is a powerful natural repellent that even overpowers the pear scent.

      - Tom Ford Lavender Extreme — three varieties of lavender with a cool camphor note that mosquitoes hate.

      - Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt — a scent of sage and sea salt, dry and mineral, without sweetness.

      - Lalique Encre Noire — a blend of cypress and vetiver, a dark, woody, and earthy scent without fruity and sweet notes.

      - Byredo Super Cedar — an almost mono-cedar scent, where cedar oil, known as a folk repellent, plays the main role.

      For maximum effectiveness, it is recommended to apply these scents to pulse points and clothing. Experts assure that this will help you avoid mosquito bites and enjoy summer evenings without discomfort.

      What scents attract mosquitoes?

      There are scents that, on the contrary, attract mosquitoes — sweet, warm, and "animalistic":

      - Fruity-sweet scents, such as coconut and caramel, which remind mosquitoes of floral nectar.

      - The combination of the scent of a heated body (lactic acid) with a sweet perfume.

      - Musky scents.

      - Amber notes reminiscent of the smell of leather.

      - Floral-fruity scents with jasmine notes.

      According to biologist Safonov, the floral-fruity scent that many use in summer "advertises" a person to mosquitoes as a source of nectar and blood. Female mosquitoes are evolutionarily tuned to seek out such aromatic notes. Floral scents also attract wasps and bees, which can be dangerous for allergy sufferers.

      What scents should be avoided in summer?

      If you do not want to become a target for mosquitoes, it is better to avoid scents containing sweet, fruity-floral, and musky notes. Here are some examples of such scents:
