Summer travels in Russia: how to save on a trip along the Golden Ring
June 9, 2026 19:30 Society At the beginning of June, Russians traditionally embark on journeys across their homeland. One of the most popular destinations remains the Golden Ring - a route that includes the ancient cities of Vladimir, Yaroslavl, and other regions. In 2026, trips along this route have become even more in demand.
Cost of travel along the Golden Ring According to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, tours for two can cost from 23,000 to 80,000 rubles depending on the program and level of accommodation. In recent years, prices for excursions have increased by 10-15% due to rising accommodation costs in hotels, bus rentals, and museum tickets. Despite this, the number of tourists has not decreased, but they have become more discerning in their choice of tours and programs.
Trend towards conscious savings In 2026, travelers increasingly choose basic tours that include only accommodation and transportation, while excursions, meals, and entrance tickets are paid for separately. This allows them to control expenses and select only interesting activities. There is also a growing demand for in-depth exploration of one location rather than quick trips to several cities.
Where to go to save money? Vice President of the Alliance of Travel Agencies of Russia, Alekсан Mkrtchyan, advised in a conversation with 360.ru to pay attention to small towns that are not part of the Small Golden Ring but are included in the Large Golden Ring. Accommodation there can be found for 3,000-4,000 rubles per day. At the same time, popular cities like Suzdal can cost up to 15,000 rubles per night.
To save money, it is better to choose dates outside of holidays. On regular weekends or weekdays, prices for tours and excursions are lower, and additional discounts may be available on-site.
Is it worth traveling by car? Many Russians are considering self-driving trips. However, Alekсан Mkrtchyan believes that this option is not suitable for beginners. An experienced guide can tell you about places that you won't find in guidebooks. Additionally, independent tourism is only cost-effective when traveling with a group of 3-5 people who share fuel expenses.
Let us remind you that in 2027, the "Golden Ring" will celebrate its 60th anniversary, and in anticipation of this date, the route is receiving additional development: it will include not only the traditional 9 cities but also 49 unique sites, including ancient capitals, merchant cities, and protected natural parks. From the Nizhny Novgorod region, the updated "Golden Ring" will include Arzamas, Bogorodsk, Bolshoye Boldino, Vyksa, Gorodets, Diveyevo, Nizhny Novgorod, Pavlovo, Purekh, and Chkalovsk.
