A 24-year-old native of Cherkessk was detained for a terrorist attack at the railway station in Nizhny Novgorod.

      On June 4, 2026, at 15:34, incidents occurred in Nizhny Novgorod where transport police detained a man suspected of committing a terrorist act on the railway. This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Volga Federal District.

      A signal about the incident was received at the duty station of the Nizhny Novgorod linear department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for transport. The train driver noticed a smoking relay cabinet at the 3rd kilometer of the section between Pochinki and Varya of the Gorky Railway within the city limits.

      An investigative operational group was dispatched to the scene. Police discovered a metal cabinet with signs of tampering and thermal effects. Remnants of flammable materials and other material evidence of arson were also seized. However, train movement was not disrupted.

      The suspect was identified and detained on the hot trail. He turned out to be a 24-year-old native of Cherkessk, who was temporarily residing in Nizhny Novgorod.

      According to preliminary data, the young man acted under the influence of remote fraudsters. Unknown individuals called him, posing as employees of various agencies, and convinced him that loans and microloans had allegedly been issued in his name. Later, he was informed that the debts had been paid off by the state and was offered to "work off" the debts by setting fire to the relay cabinet.

      He received instructions via messenger. Following the directions, the suspect purchased a flammable liquid, arrived in the evening by taxi at the railway section, and using the fuel, rags, and a lighter, set the equipment on fire. He did not receive any reward for the crime committed.

      A criminal case has been initiated against the detainee under part 1 of article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "Terrorist Act." Until a preventive measure is chosen, he has been detained in accordance with article 91 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Russian Federation. The maximum penalty under this article is up to 20 years of imprisonment.
