The religious scholar Sapelkin explained the meaning of the holiday of Kurban Bayram.

May 26, 2026 17:55 Society Eid al-Adha is one of the main holidays in Islam, symbolizing devotion to God, mercy, and the willingness to share with others. In 2026, it will begin on the evening of May 26 and last for three days.

As writer and historian-religionist Nikolai Sapelkin told 360.ru, the history of the holiday is connected with the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham in the biblical tradition), who was visited in a dream by an angel with a command from Allah to sacrifice his eldest son. Despite his deep paternal love, Ibrahim, following God's will, went to the valley of Mina. However, at the last moment, Allah replaced the sacrifice with a ram, seeing the sincerity and devotion of the prophet. This story, described in the Quran, demonstrates the importance of faith and self-sacrifice. Sapelkin emphasized that the meaning of Eid al-Adha lies in demonstrating faith, mercy, and the willingness to share with loved ones. The holiday reminds us that spiritual and moral values are more important than material goods. It also symbolizes spiritual self-denial and the importance of adhering to religious prescriptions.

Preparation for the holiday begins with a 10-day fast, during which Muslims engage in prayers, reading the Holy Scriptures, and reflections. An important part of the preparation is the selection of a sacrificial animal—a ram—which must be healthy, well-groomed, and neither too young nor too old. The animal is slaughtered after the festive prayer, and the meat is distributed to those in need, friends, and relatives. Special attention is paid to cleaning and preparing festive dishes. Homes are tidied up, and traditional treats and sweets are placed on the table. It is also customary to give alms—sadaqah—which can be both material and non-material. The main condition is to do good deeds secretly, so as not to attract attention to oneself.

The holiday begins with ritual washing and dressing in clean clothes. In the morning, Muslims gather in mosques for communal prayer and a festive sermon. After this, the sacrificial ritual begins, which continues until sunset. The carcass of the animal is divided into three parts: one is kept for the family, the second is given to those in need, and the third is gifted to friends and relatives. Eid al-Adha is traditionally celebrated in the company of family and friends, inviting the imam and representatives of other faiths into the home. In some countries where Islam is the state religion, this holiday is declared a public holiday, and believers spend time as guests, treating visitors to the best dishes.

During Eid al-Adha, it is important to observe certain prohibitions. One must not offend others, refuse help, or deny hospitality. It is also forbidden to wear dirty clothes and engage in heavy work. The holiday calls for peace, harmony, and kindness, reminding us of the importance of spiritual values and mercy.
