Doctor Abashin explained the reasons behind the increase in Russians seeking help from psychologists.
May 22, 2026 16:40 Society Every year, more than 3.5 million Russians need psychological support, and it needs to be made more accessible. This was reported by Health Minister Mikhail Murashko at the psychiatrists' congress "Psychiatry in Mixed Reality: New Challenges - New Opportunities." Psychologist Anatoly Abashin noted in an interview for 360.ru that the increase in the number of Russians seeking help from mental health specialists is due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the special military operation, and global changes in the geopolitical situation. According to Abashin, there has been a significant increase in cases of anxiety disorders and personality disorders in recent years. This is related to the fact that the pandemic caused feelings of anxiety and restrictions, which were then exacerbated by the situation related to the special military operation. The specialist believes that considering the population of Russia, psychological help may be needed by every fifth person, and support in the form of psychocorrection may be needed by every third person. Abashin also noted that previously in the country, it was not common to seek help from psychologists, and problems were discussed within the family. However, the situation is changing now: awareness of the importance of psychology is growing, and people are beginning to understand that professional help can be effective. The demand for psychologists' services is also increasing due to corporate voluntary health insurance programs, within which companies provide access to psychological support for their employees. The psychologist emphasized that each case is unique. Some people cannot establish relationships because they have not been able to overcome a certain crisis in the past. The specialist's task is to help the person return to that moment, experience it, and continue moving forward. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
