Nizhny Novgorod region showed record growth of the SFR in Russia.

      On May 14, 2026, at 15:31, the Nizhny Novgorod region took first place in Russia for the dynamics of growth in the total fertility rate. This was reported by the governor of the region, Gleb Nikitin, on his MAX channel. According to Rosstat, in the first four months of 2026, the total fertility rate in the region increased by 2% — the highest growth rate in the country. As of the end of April, the absolute value of the TFR reached 1.333.

      As Nikitin noted, by the end of 2025, the Nizhny Novgorod region first exceeded the TFR level in the Volga Federal District, and now "confidently exceeds it," while the upward trend continues to strengthen.

      The governor also drew attention to the dynamics of indicators since July 2025, when the "Osnova" project was launched in the region. According to him, since that moment, the total fertility rate has increased by 5.79% overall, and for third and subsequent children — by 10.51%.

      "The fundamental turnaround in the dynamics of fertility, as seen from the graph, completely coincides with the moment of the launch of 'Osnova'," emphasized the head of the region.

      Nikitin added that demographic issues are a key priority for regional authorities. He reminded that Russian President Vladimir Putin previously highly praised the Nizhny Novgorod program and cited it as an example for other regions of the country.

      "This is a priority for the People's Program of 'United Russia', which is currently being formed. Of course, this is the number one issue for regional authorities, and for me personally," stated the governor.
