The court did not soften the sentence for the Nizhny Novgorod woman who tried to burn her sleeping son.

      May 5, 2026 16:23 Incidents The Nizhny Novgorod Regional Court reviewed the verdict of the Balakhna City Court in the case of Tatyana Sokolova, accused of attempting to murder her own son. The court established that during a joint consumption of alcohol between mother and son, a quarrel occurred. Against the backdrop of the conflict, the woman decided to take his life, inflicting special suffering. Waiting for the young man to fall asleep, she took matches and set fire to the pillow on which he was lying. However, she was unable to carry out her criminal intent to the end—the victim woke up during the fire. The first-instance court found Sokolova guilty under part 3 of article 30, subparagraphs "d, e" of part 2 of article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. She was sentenced to 8 years and 1 month of imprisonment with a restriction of freedom for 1 year. She must serve her sentence in a general regime correctional colony. The appellate court concluded that the circumstances of the case were established correctly, the legal qualification of the convicted person's actions is justified, and the imposed sentence corresponds to the committed act. By the ruling of May 4, 2026, the verdict of January 22, 2026, was left unchanged. The decision came into legal force on the day it was adopted.
