Nizhny Novgorod region provided temporary shelter to more than 100 Syrians.
On April 24, 2026, 11:21 Society More than 100 Syrians arrived in the Nizhny Novgorod region in 2025 and obtained temporary asylum status in Russia. According to regional ombudsman Oksana Kislytsina, it was Syrians who most frequently sought protection in the Russian Federation last year against the backdrop of ongoing armed conflicts in their country. The report referenced by "Ъ-Privolzhye" states that several hundred families were accommodated in temporary residence centers in various regions of Russia. The status of temporary asylum grants foreign citizens the right to work officially, receive free secondary education, and access medical assistance within the compulsory health insurance system. However, to transition to a more stable legal status, one must go through the standard procedure: first obtain a temporary residence permit, then apply for a residence permit, and after five years, apply for Russian citizenship. A separate issue remains the language barrier. To obtain a temporary residence permit, confirmation of knowledge of the Russian language is required, but most of the arrivals do not possess it. However, there are no programs to assist in mastering it. In this regard, the ombudsman had to seek help from university leaders. Earlier, it was reported that almost five hundred migrants were deported from the Nizhny Novgorod region since the beginning of 2026. Also, we remind you that last year there was a reduction in the issuance of temporary residence permits by 25.8% and residence permits by 25.3%. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
