The April snowdrifts have grown to 27 cm in Nizhny Novgorod.
April 21, 2026 18:18 Society The height of the snow cover reached 27 cm during the anomalous April snowfalls in Nizhny Novgorod. This was reported by specialists from the Phobos center. According to meteorologists, a temporary snow cover has formed in the central regions of the European part of Russia. In the Nizhny Novgorod region, the snow height reached 27 cm — one of the highest figures. Only in Mari El is it higher by one centimeter. Deputy Mayor Anton Maksimov noted that the forecast for the beginning of the week was only partially fulfilled. According to the Hydrometeorological Center, about 30 mm of precipitation fell in a day, and the snow cover reached 21-27 cm, which turned out to be higher than initial expectations. Road services were put on high alert. During the night shift, up to 40 units of equipment were deployed to treat the roadway with anti-icing materials, using about 500 tons of technical salt. Additionally, snowplow-brush MTZs and loaders were involved. Round-the-clock water pumping from the roads has also been organized. For this, 29 vacuum machines and 28 motor pumps are being used. Alexander Kutsenko, deputy director of the MBU "Center," reported that enterprises are working without breaks. Due to the ongoing snowfall for the second day, half of the previously conserved equipment has been returned to service. Roads are being treated with anti-icing materials followed by cleaning, primarily on descents and ascents, as well as central streets, to ensure uninterrupted public transport movement. Snow removal has been organized, and the cleaning of stops, sidewalks, pedestrian paths, and stairs is underway. Kutsenko also noted that the current April snowfall is comparable to the anomalous precipitation that occurred in the city in January. After the snowfall stops, the main focus will be on pumping meltwater from highways and intra-block passages. Daily monitoring of areas prone to landslide processes is also being conducted due to heavy precipitation and rapid snow melting. It was previously reported that two buses went off the road due to the snowfall in the Nizhny Novgorod region. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
