Involving veterans of the special military operation in sports and physical education is an important area of work for the State Fund "Defenders of the Fatherland," which is carried out in accordance with the goals and objectives of the state program "Sport of Russia." Today, sports are one of the key elements of rehabilitation for heroes with severe injuries who are returning to civilian life. The "Defenders of the Fatherland Cup" tournaments, which the fund has been conducting since 2023 in collaboration with the Paralympic Committee with the support of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation and regional governments, are not just comprehensive competitions in popular sports among heroes, but a space for support, communication, and networking. More than 2,000 veterans of combat operations from across the country participated in the competitions. In 2025, the event took place in Dzerzhinsk and brought together over 200 veterans of the special military operation from the Volga Federal District. "Interregional, regional, and municipal competitions of the 'Defenders of the Fatherland Cup' help to create a platform for experience exchange, mutual assistance, and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle among veterans. We will continue our work so that every veteran and their loved ones have a wide choice of activities they enjoy and their own path of development in various sports, regardless of circumstances," noted the State Secretary - Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Chairperson of the "Defenders of the Fatherland" fund Anna Tsivileva. Thanks to the joint efforts of the "Defenders of the Fatherland" fund, the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, the Paralympic Committee of Russia, and all-Russian sports federations, more than 6,000 veterans of the special military operation with severe injuries are engaged in various sports. Over 750 veterans have joined the teams of the subjects of Russia in adaptive sports. Participants in the "Defenders of the Fatherland Cup" demonstrate skills in competitions for persons with musculoskeletal disorders: shooting, archery, table tennis, powerlifting, sitting volleyball; in disciplines for the blind: powerlifting and table tennis (showdown), as well as sports knife throwing. For sports activities, the fund provides veterans with specialized rehabilitation technical means. Sledge hockey is gaining particular popularity among veterans. In 2025, the fund provided equipment for 184 veteran hockey players in 47 teams. The fund is also actively developing other disciplines, such as wheelchair rugby, backgammon, and many others. The branch of the "Defenders of the Fatherland" fund, together with the Ministry of Sports of the Nizhny Novgorod region, is implementing a number of joint projects - in particular, "The Power of Sports for Ours," within which private sports clubs in the region provide free hours for fighters and their families in various areas: padel tennis, boxing, Muay Thai, and others. As previously reported, the state program "Sport of Russia" aims to create and improve conditions for physical activity, promote mass sports, and enhance the quality of life and satisfaction of Russians. It is planned to expand sports infrastructure, hold mass sports events, and engage residents in participating in the All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex "Ready for Labor and Defense." The development of children's sports will also continue in the country, and opportunities for sports activities for veterans of the special military operation will be expanded.
