Nizhny Novgorod plans to abandon paper tickets in public transport.

On April 15, 2026, at 07:42 Society In Nizhny Novgorod, the possibility of transitioning to digital payment for public transport without issuing paper tickets is being considered. The plans were announced by Denis Ryabinin, the deputy head of the regional transport ministry. According to him, the necessary regulatory framework for implementing paperless payments has already been established. However, a final decision is intended to be made only after discussing the initiative with the city's residents and transport operators. One of the problems of such a transition may be the lack of a familiar way for passengers to monitor their trips. By abandoning paper tickets, they will not be able to check in real-time how many trips are left on their card or how many minutes are still available. At the same time, the technical infrastructure is generally already ready. Stationary terminals have been installed on approximately one thousand units of transport out of 1014. Meanwhile, regulatory authorities continue to identify cases where drivers intentionally disable the equipment. It is worth noting that from July 1, 2026, cash payments for public transport in the capital of the Volga region will be abolished. Why this is necessary and how payments will be made—read here.
