Saratov scientists propose to build a small-capacity nuclear power plant on the Moon.

April 9, 2026 16:58 Science Scientists from Rosatom have proposed the construction of small-capacity nuclear power plants on the Moon, capable of operating without maintenance for at least ten years. This was reported to the information service "Vesti" by the chief designer of the RFNC-VNIIEF (Sarov) Valery Efremov. According to him, the proposal involves the development of installations based on RTGs — radioisotope thermoelectric generators. Such devices convert heat released during the decay of radioactive isotopes into electrical energy. "We have approached the Lavochkin Association with an initiative to create small-capacity nuclear power plants based on RTGs," he said. He added that, according to scientists' estimates, the implementation of the project will ensure the autonomous operation of such a station on the Moon for at least ten years. It is expected that it will be used to prepare the infrastructure for the future placement of a lunar station with a full-fledged nuclear reactor. It was previously reported that RFNC-VNIIEF is celebrating its 80th anniversary. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
