Almost 30% of pregnant women in Nizhny Novgorod refused to have an abortion in a situation of choice.

April 8, 2026 17:28 Society Over the year, the number of abortions in the Nizhny Novgorod region has decreased by approximately 10%. Such results were achieved thanks to the implementation of the "Emergency Demographic Assistance" project. This was reported by Governor Gleb Nikitin in a conversation with journalist Yuri Podolyaka. Currently, out of 55 private clinics that provided abortion services, only three continue to operate. The other institutions have joined an agreement that mandates psychological counseling for women who find themselves in a reproductive choice situation. According to data for January-February of this year, 520 cases of abortion were registered in the region — 136 fewer than in the same period last year. At the beginning of 2025, after consultations, 19.9% of women in the region who were in a choice situation refused to have an abortion, and in 2026 this figure rose to 28.4%. At the same time, a study by the Institute of Demographic Development shows that residents of the region make about 400,000 search queries on the topic of abortions annually. Additionally, about 30-40% of women avoid undergoing psychological counseling. "Approximately two thousand abortions are performed annually in the Nizhny Novgorod region under compulsory health insurance. At the same time, there is a gray market for medications for abortion and voluntary health insurance services, so it is difficult to realistically assess what resources we currently have," explained Governor Gleb Nikitin. In the interview with Podolyaka, the regional head also stated that queues for IVF have been eliminated in the Nizhny Novgorod region. It was previously reported that 600 lives were saved in the Nizhny Novgorod region thanks to pre-abortion consultations. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
