15 cases of rabies in animals were identified in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

On April 7, 2026, 07:58 Society Since the beginning of 2026, 15 cases of rabies in animals—both domestic and wild—have been identified in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This was reported to NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" by the regional veterinary committee. In the same period last year, 8 cases of the disease were registered. At the same time, specialists note that compared to 2022-2023, the figures have decreased by almost half. Overall, the current situation remains within the average long-term values. The main source of infection remains foxes, accounting for over 40% of all identified cases. Additionally, in 90% of cases of domestic animal infection, contact with wildlife, primarily foxes, was recorded. Experts link this to the fact that foxes are a natural reservoir of rabies, as well as the availability of a food base near populated areas, which encourages their proximity to humans. It should be added that large-scale preventive work continues in the region. The volume of vaccination for domestic animals has been increased to 200,000 heads. Additionally, vaccination of ownerless animals is being conducted: in 2025, about 2,900 such animals were vaccinated in municipalities and urban districts. Oral vaccination of wild carnivores is also being carried out. Approximately 500,000 doses of rabies vaccine have been placed in the territory of 158 hunting farms. It was previously reported that the shooting of foxes was permitted in the Dalnekonstantinovsky district due to the threat of rabies. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
