The maximum amount of overpayment on microloans will be reduced in Russia starting from April 1.

March 24, 2026 13:25 Economy From April 1, the maximum amount of overpayment on consumer loans issued by microfinance organizations in Russia for a term of up to one year will decrease. The indicator will be reduced from 130% to 100% of the principal amount. This was reported by RIA Novosti in the press service of the self-regulatory organization "MiR".

As explained by the SRO, the innovation is aimed at limiting the maximum possible amount of overpayment on such loans.

The organization provided an example of a specific category of loans — up to 100,000 rubles for a term of 125 to 180 days. Considering the new limit at a rate of 0.8% per day, it will become impossible to issue a loan for more than 125 days, as the established overpayment limit will be exceeded.

Experts also explained how calculations for borrowers will change. If previously a client took 10,000 rubles, the maximum amount to be repaid, including penalties and fines, could reach 23,000 rubles. After the changes come into effect, under the same initial conditions, the upper limit will be 20,000 rubles.

At the same time, the organization emphasized that conscientious market participants did not abuse the opportunity to charge maximum overpayment and did not base their policies on bringing the debt amount to the limit values.

The press service added that the market is already oriented towards a client-oriented approach. In cases of financial difficulties and the risk of payment delays, microfinance organizations often offer clients credit holidays within their corporate groups.

Moreover, MFIs have become more careful in selecting borrowers even at the application review stage and strive to retain clients. Therefore, as noted by the SRO, fewer companies consider overpayment as their main source of income, focusing on long-term relationships with clients.
