Poachers were caught illegally fishing for sturgeon in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
March 25, 2026 18:19 Incidents Fishermen caught poaching – they caught sturgeon from the Oka River, which is listed in the Red Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region. Details were provided by the press service of the transport police for the Volga Federal District.
During a raid near the village of Dudenovo in the Pavlovsky district, officers from the Nizhny Novgorod transport police caught three local residents violating the law. They were fishing using illegal gear. Each caught three sturgeons, causing damage to the natural resource potential of the region amounting to over 40,000 rubles.
The prohibited fishing gear, as well as the catch itself, were confiscated. The question of initiating a criminal case under Part 1 of Article 256 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Illegal extraction (catch) of aquatic biological resources") is being considered.
The police clarified that the fishermen could face imprisonment for up to two years. If guilt is proven, each will also have to pay compensation for each caught sturgeon - 4,572 rubles per piece.
Earlier, Nizhny Novgorod residents were reminded of the ban on fishing in wintering holes until April 30.
