March 25, 2026 18:34 Sports On March 25, during a working visit to Nizhny Novgorod, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Chernyshenko, together with the Secretary of the General Council of the "United Russia" party Vladimir Yakushev, the Presidential Envoy in the Volga Federal District Igor Komarov, and the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Secretary of the regional branch of "United Russia" Gleb Nikitin, assessed the readiness of the Ice Arena at Strelka. Dmitry Chernyshenko called the facility "a real gift for the residents of Nizhny Novgorod." He also noted that the construction timelines are under the party's control, and decisions regarding the prioritization of facilities were made taking into account local proposals. "Thank you for your work!" added the Deputy Prime Minister.

The new arena will be used not only for hockey but also for other sports, including figure skating and volleyball. Additionally, due to its acoustic characteristics, it is planned to host concerts, exhibitions, and large events here. Vladimir Yakushev reminded that the president set the task of ensuring regular sports activities for 70% of the country's residents by 2030. The development of mass sports is part of the "United Russia" people's program, within which sports infrastructure is being created with government support. He noted that the ice arena is a long-awaited facility not only for Nizhny Novgorod but for the entire Volga Federal District, emphasizing that "the facility is unique" and will be in demand by both athletes and fans.

Gleb Nikitin reported that the arena at Strelka is one of the largest sports facilities under construction in Russia. It includes a main venue with 12,000 seats, two training ice rinks, a universal sports hall, and an acrobatics hall. According to the governor, construction is in the final stages. "The ice arena is highly anticipated by both professional athletes and fans of our hockey club 'Torpedo.' It will become part of the public cultural and sports cluster at Strelka," Nikitin noted, adding that the facility will allow for international-level competitions in hockey, sled hockey, and figure skating.

The quality of the arena was also highly praised by KHL President Alexey Morozov. During the visit, the delegation met with veterans of HC "Torpedo" — Yuri Fyodorov and Mikhail Presnyakov. They noted that the new arena will open additional opportunities for the training and performances of Nizhny Novgorod athletes. Additionally, Deputy Minister of Sports of Russia Alexey Morozov informed about the progress of sports infrastructure construction in the country and, in particular, in the Volga Federal District.
