      March 25, 2026 17:04 Society The head of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev, held a meeting dedicated to the city's cleanup after winter. The discussion involved district heads, leaders of relevant departments, and municipal road enterprises. Following the meeting, the mayor announced that from April 5 to May 15, the regional center will hold the traditional month of beautification. This year, it is particularly relevant, as the past winter was the snowiest in the history of meteorological observations. Yuri Shalabaev noted that road services have already begun transitioning to summer work mode: equipment has been re-equipped, and cleaning of roadside areas, sidewalks, and lawns from debris is underway, along with pothole repairs. He clarified that with the launch of asphalt plants, tentatively in April, the city will begin more extensive patch repairs on roads. "There is a lot of work ahead, and it will not be limited to the month of beautification," the mayor emphasized, adding that during this period, the main efforts will be concentrated, after which services will switch to regular city maintenance mode.

      The date for the citywide cleanup day has not yet been determined. As Yuri Shalabaev explained, a decision will be made after assessing weather conditions: "For now, we plan to hold the cleanup after Easter, which will be on April 12 this year." Special attention, according to him, will be given to pothole repairs. The mayor instructed to minimize the time taken for work—from milling to completion—and to carry it out at night whenever possible, to avoid inconveniencing residents of nearby houses. Traditionally, not only municipal services but also residents, as well as teams from enterprises and organizations, will join in the beautification efforts.

      Deputy Head of the Administration Anton Maximov reported that the task has been set to bring the city to a normative state in the spring-summer period as quickly as possible, utilizing all resources. Priority work has already begun: contracts for road repairs with hot asphalt have been signed, contractors have been identified, and the mixtures to be used are being agreed upon. Additionally, washing of road infrastructure—barriers, guardrails, bins, and bus stops—is underway. The meeting also discussed preparations for flooding, which, according to specialists' forecasts, will begin in April. The municipality is strengthening its technical base: at the request of Yuri Shalabaev, the first six units of new special equipment—vacuum trucks and vacuum machines—have been purchased. Earlier, there were reports of plans to increase the fleet of water pumping equipment by 25%. Road enterprises note that after a demanding winter, the workload does not decrease. According to employees, the equipment has already been switched to summer mode, and to eliminate the consequences of winter, including salt stains on roads, high-pressure equipment is being used to clean both the roadway and elements of urban infrastructure.
