Nizhny Novgorod has surpassed Rome and Paris in the global quality of life ranking.

      On March 23, 2026, at 09:52, Society Nizhny Novgorod ranked 190th among 304 major cities worldwide in the quality of life index according to the analytical portal Numbeo. The city's final score was 149.3 points. In the ranking, the capital of the Volga region surpassed several major global centers, including Rome, Paris, London, as well as Los Angeles and New York. For comparison, in November 2025, Nizhny Novgorod was in 165th place on the global list with a score of 147.9 points and ranked second among the largest cities in Russia, only behind Kaliningrad. In the new ranking, Kaliningrad again came out ahead, taking 167th place. Following Nizhny Novgorod among Russian cities were Kazan (236th place), Krasnodar (239th), Moscow (242nd), St. Petersburg (243rd), Yekaterinburg (273rd), and Novosibirsk (274th). According to the study, Nizhny Novgorod demonstrated growth in almost all assessment criteria. The quality of life index is formed based on a combination of indicators reflecting the overall standard of living in the city. Factors considered include the purchasing power of the population, safety level, healthcare quality, cost of living, ratio of real estate prices to income, average commute time, pollution level, and climatic conditions. The highest score the city achieved was in healthcare—73.9 points. The safety level was also rated highly—72.2 points. The leader of the global ranking was The Hague. The top five also included other Dutch cities: Utrecht, Eindhoven, Groningen, and Rotterdam. The last, 304th position was taken by Lagos in Nigeria.
