The Nizhny Novgorod Museum-Reserve and the State Military-Historical Museum-Reserve "Borodino Field" presented a joint exhibition project "Old Years. Sketches of Manor Life and Everyday Life" in Mozhaysk, Moscow Region. The exhibition will be open for visits until September 6. This was reported by the Ministry of Culture of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The exhibition, dedicated to the way of life in the Russian province of the 19th to early 20th centuries, is set up in the Imperial Traveling Palace, which is part of the museum. "The Nizhny Novgorod Museum-Reserve is not just our colleagues, but also good friends. It is gratifying that we start the new year with such a significant exhibition project. I am sure our visitors will find this exhibition interesting, as the exhibits differ from the usual military-historical theme of our museum. It will be especially interesting to see how such an exhibition fits into the interiors of the imperial palace where it is presented," noted Igor Korneev, director of the Mozhaysk Museum-Reserve "Borodino Field." As a sign of cooperation between the two museums, Igor Korneev, director of the "Borodino Field" museum-reserve, presented his colleagues from the Nizhny Novgorod Museum-Reserve with the award "For the Preservation of Cultural and Historical Heritage of Russia." This award was established by the Military-Historical Museum "Borodino Field." The project "Old Years" is a large-scale study of the world of the Russian noble estate during a period of global socio-economic changes following the abolition of serfdom. The exhibition vividly demonstrates how technical progress intruded into the measured rhythm of rural life, changing the usual lifestyle of landowners. "This project is a bright result of inter-museum dialogue that we are building at the federal level. Our journey began in the Republic of Belarus, where the exhibition received enthusiastic reviews, and today, thanks to the professional community and the forum "Museum Routes of Russia," the project continues its life in the Moscow Region. For us, this is an important stage in the development of horizontal connections between regions and an opportunity to show how the technical innovations of the past became part of Russia's cultural code," believes Yuri Filippov, general director of the Nizhny Novgorod Museum-Reserve. The basis of the exhibition consists of a collection from the branch of the Nizhny Novgorod Museum-Reserve - the Technical Museum. Its head, honorary citizen of Nizhny Novgorod and enthusiast Vyacheslav Khurtin selected nearly 70 items for the exhibition, many of which are unique monuments of science and technology. "We approached the selection of items for this exhibition with special reverence, striving to present the most complete picture of manor life. We wanted to show all aspects of this life, from everyday life to technical achievements that changed the world. The collection of the Technical Museum has previously delighted audiences in China and the Republic of Belarus, and I am sure that Muscovites and guests of the Moscow Region will show no less interest. I am confident that after getting acquainted with this exhibition, many will want to see other exhibits from the Technical Museum, and we will be happy to welcome guests in Nizhny Novgorod," shared Vyacheslav Khurtin with his expectations. The exhibition transports the viewer into the world of the manor, where traditions and innovation, luxury and simplicity intertwined, and the measured rhythm of rural life coexisted with progressive trends from Europe. The exhibition is structured into thematic sections, allowing for a comprehensive study of various aspects of manor life. Thus, the exhibition introduces visitors to the means of transportation used by landowners, technical achievements, including the first electric devices appearing among the most progressive hosts. The exhibition also explores the field of home medicine and furniture and interior items.
The exhibition is complemented by reproductions of photographs from the collections of the Nizhny Novgorod Museum-Reserve, depicting the manors of the Nizhny Novgorod province and their inhabitants. These photographs will allow visitors to form a more complete understanding of the life and everyday life of the manor world of that time, draw historical analogies, and feel the connection of times. The exhibition "Old Years. Sketches of Manor Life and Everyday Life" will run at the museum-reserve "Borodino Field" until September 6, 2026. It is worth noting that from mid-September 2025 to mid-January 2026, the exhibition "Old Years. Sketches of Manor Life and Everyday Life" was presented at the branch of the Museum of the History of the City of Minsk "Loshitskaya Manor."
