Torpedo hockey players claimed a come-from-behind 4–3 victory in a tense match against Moscow's Dynamo. This meeting was the third between the teams this season and ended in favor of the Nizhny Novgorod side for the first time.
In the first period, after a quick attack, Amir Garaev delivered an accurate pass to Maxim Letunov, who opened the scoring.
In the second period Dynamo managed to restore parity. In the third period the Muscovites quickly seized the initiative: first they went ahead, and then, just 24 seconds later, increased their lead to two goals — 3–1.
The team held firm while short-handed, then launched several sharp attacks. One of them was finished by Yegor Sokolov, cutting the deficit to a single goal — 3–2. With 37 seconds left on the clock, Nizhny's top scorer Yegor Vinogradov equalized, sending the game into overtime.
In the five-minute overtime Sergey Goncharuk broke forward and passed to Daniil Zhuravlev, who brought Torpedo the victory.
This win was a milestone for the Nizhny Novgorod club — their 550th in the history of appearances in the Kontinental Hockey League.
Despite earning two points, Torpedo remained in sixth place in the standings. Dynamo, having picked up one point, moved up to fourth place.
The Nizhny Novgorod side will play their next match on 14 January at home. The opponent will be the current Gagarin Cup holder — Yaroslavl's Lokomotiv.
Recall that in an interview with NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" Torpedo forward Sergey Goncharuk spoke about working with Alexey Isakov and the atmosphere in the team.
