On January 12 in Nizhny Novgorod, the regional stage of the All-Russian Schoolchildren Olympiad began at the Ankudinovskaya Secondary School. The first to demonstrate their knowledge in the subject "Economics" were about 230 students in grades 9–11. In total, 3,500 young people from Nizhny Novgorod advanced to the regional stage of the Olympiad this year.
The opening ceremony of the regional stage was attended by the region’s Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Maria Chernikova, and the Director of the Department of Education of the Nizhny Novgorod City Administration, Irina Boryakova.
As the ministry reminded, the All-Russian Schoolchildren Olympiad includes four stages: school, municipal, regional and final. This academic year, more than 460,000 participants joined the Olympiad, 60,000 more than the previous year.
"The All-Russian Schoolchildren Olympiad plays a very important role in identifying talents and revealing students’ potential. It is very important that the number of participants in our region is increasing every year: if last year the regional stage gathered more than 3,300 students, now this figure has reached 3,500. Every student should remember that participating in the Olympiad is valuable in itself: it is not only a test of their abilities but also another step toward future professional success," Maria Chernikova said.
The regional stage of the Olympiad is conducted according to unified tasks developed by the central subject-methodological commissions of the Ministry of Education of Russia. This academic year, students in grades 9–11 will demonstrate their knowledge in 24 subjects.
"A feature of this year’s All-Russian Schoolchildren Olympiad was the division of the subject 'Informatics' into four separate profiles. This means that already at the school stage participants could show themselves in four directions: robotics, artificial intelligence, programming and information security. These are precisely the areas of informatics that are particularly in demand in the modern Russian economy," emphasized Irina Zinovyeva, director of the regional Vega center, which is the operator running the Olympiad in the region.
Students shared their experience of participating in the Olympiad.
"I am taking part in the Olympiad to win and to get a positive boost, because any competition is, first of all, valuable experience. I am especially fascinated by economics problems that allow me to demonstrate my logic and analytical thinking. The most difficult tasks turn out to be exercises involving the construction of production possibility curves and the application of elements of game theory," said Anastasia Kazakova, a student of School No. 182 in Nizhny Novgorod.
The regional stage of the All-Russian Schoolchildren Olympiad in the Nizhny Novgorod region will run from January 12 to March 14, 2026, and will cover all general education subjects.
Winners of the regional stage will have the opportunity to take part in the final stage of the Olympiad. Diplomas of winners and prizewinners of the final stage of the competition, valid for four years, grant the right to enter the country’s leading universities without entrance exams in the corresponding field. Winners and prizewinners also have the opportunity to take part in training and preparatory camps to prepare and form Russian national teams for participation in international olympiads.
The All-Russian Schoolchildren Olympiad is held within the framework of the national project "Youth and Children", which is being implemented on the instructions of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. The national project includes nine federal projects and programs: "Russia — a Land of Opportunity", "We Are Together", "Russia in the World", "The Best for Children", "Leading Schools", "Teachers and Mentors", "Creating a Network of Modern Campuses", "Universities for a Generation of Leaders" and "Professionalitet".
