Scientists from Nizhny Novgorod are beginning preclinical trials of a drug that may completely cure type 1 diabetes. The study will be conducted by specialists from the Research Institute of Experimental Oncology and Biomedical Technologies of PIMU. Medical blogger Alexey Nikonov reported this on his Telegram channel.

According to him, the experiment will begin on laboratory rats born in early 2026. These animals will be the first to receive the innovative treatment — pancreatic islet cells will be transplanted into them using a special capsule.

Unlike traditional approaches, which only focus on disease control, the project's goal is a complete cure. After the transplant, the islet cells will begin to produce insulin on their own and regulate blood sugar levels. The capsule enclosing the cells is coated with a special polymer. It protects its contents from attacks by the immune system, allowing the cells to engraft and function without rejection.

Nikonov added that the rats will be true pioneers, like Belka and Strelka. The success of the experiment could open the way to a complete cure for people with type 1 diabetes.

Earlier it was reported that Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod developed an innovative method for synthesizing compounds that can enhance the effectiveness of anticancer drugs.
