Nizhny Novgorod has entered the top 100 safest cities in the world.
12 January 2026 14:14 Society Nizhny Novgorod was ranked among the safest cities on the planet in 2025 according to the Numbeo* service, placing 56th out of 263. In terms of safety it outranked not only Russian megacities but also major foreign cities such as Amsterdam, Antalya, Montreal, Oslo and Sydney.
Nizhny Novgorod’s safety index was 71.85 points. By comparison, the leader of the ranking, Abu Dhabi (UAE), has a score of 88.4. Besides the UAE capital, the top three included Doha (Qatar) and Dubai (UAE). Also in the top five were Taipei (Taiwan) and Sharjah (UAE).
Among Russian cities, Kazan (72nd place), Kaliningrad (78th) and Moscow (99th) made the top 100. St. Petersburg was slightly lower — in 111th place.
The safety index in Numbeo’s ranking reflects the perceptions of residents and visitors to the city. It is calculated based on responses to questions about the overall level of crime, feelings of safety during the day and at night, concerns about assaults, robberies, car thefts, physical violence, harassment and hate crimes, the level of property crime, and the severity of violent crimes (beatings, murders, sexual crimes).
The higher the safety index, the safer the city is considered to be.
Earlier it was reported that Bolshaya Pokrovskaya took sixth place in the ranking of the most expensive shopping streets in Russia.
