The State Traffic Inspectorate of the Nizhny Novgorod Region has stepped up control over the seasonal use of tires. Inspectors check vehicles both during routine stops and during special raids. The reason is simple — in winter there are still many cars on the roads without season-appropriate tires, which directly affects safety, reports the “Avtospravochnaya” portal.

The rules are now clear and the same across the country. From December 1, 2025 to February 28, 2026 passenger cars and light trucks with a maximum mass of up to 3.5 tons are required to use winter tires. In summer, from June to August, the use of studded tires is prohibited. It is important not only what type of tire is fitted but also how: winter or studded tires must be installed on all wheels. Mixing different types of tires is not allowed.

For violating the rules, a warning or a fine of 500 rubles may be imposed. But it may not end there. An inspector has the right to require the violation be remedied — for example, to replace the tires. If a driver ignores the requirement and does not show the vehicle again, more serious consequences are possible: from termination of the vehicle’s registration with the traffic police (GIBDD) to court. In some cases the case can lead to a fine of up to 4,000 rubles, compulsory labor, or even administrative arrest.

It is not difficult for inspectors to check seasonality: the required tires have a special marking. In January 2026 such raids have already begun across the country, and experience shows — it is better to prepare in advance than to risk your license and your wallet.
