The psychiatrist reported difficulties returning to work after the holidays.
In the closing days of the New Year holidays, many people feel stressed about the upcoming return to work. Psychiatrist and chief physician of Clinical Psychiatric Hospital No. 1 of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Suchkov, shared advice on how to return to a regular work and rest routine as effectively and calmly as possible.
"Medical professionals will agree with me that sometimes prolonged rest can throw a person out of psychological balance. The transition from extended holidays to workdays can be difficult, but entirely manageable. There are several simple but effective tips to help you smoothly 'get back on track at work.' By following these rules, you can return painlessly to your usual rhythm of life while maintaining a positive attitude and energy," the doctor assured.
According to Yuri Suchkov, the most common mistake is plunging headlong back into work. After a long period of sleeping until midday and staying up late, the body needs time to adapt. Therefore, several days before returning to work you should begin gradually shifting your bedtime and wake-up time closer to your usual schedule.
"Start with 15–30 minutes a day, gradually increasing this interval. This will help avoid acute stress on the body and make morning rises easier," the physician advised.
The psychiatrist reminded that quality sleep is the foundation of recovery. Yuri Suchkov recommended that Nizhny Novgorod residents sleep at least 7–8 hours a night. It is important to create comfortable sleeping conditions: air the room, reduce sources of light and noise, and use a comfortable pillow and mattress. Medical professionals recommend avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bedtime. If someone has trouble falling asleep, they should try relaxation techniques such as meditation or breathing exercises.
"The third rule is healthy eating. New Year holidays are often accompanied by overeating and consuming unhealthy foods. To restore the digestive system and regain energy, you need to reassess your diet. Include more fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. Limit consumption of sugar, processed foods and fast food. Drink enough water—at least 1.5–2 liters a day. This will help flush toxins from the body and improve overall well-being," the specialist noted.
The doctor warned Nizhny Novgorod residents against radical detox diets, as they can be harmful to the body. The physician advised gentle methods of cleansing—drinking herbal teas or smoothies made from vegetables and fruits, as well as visiting a sauna. Before starting any procedures it is important to consult a doctor, especially if the person has any chronic illnesses. Detox is not a panacea, but rather an auxiliary tool for restoring balance in the body after an excess of holiday treats.
"Remember physical activity. Even a small amount of exercise will help you perk up and improve your mood. You do not have to immediately run to the gym or, even more so, subject yourself to grueling workouts. Start with simple exercises such as morning calisthenics, walks outdoors or yoga. Gradually increase the intensity and duration of workouts. Physical activity promotes the production of endorphins—'happiness hormones'—which will help cope with post-holiday blues," Yuri Suchkov added.
Another tip from the doctor is planning and organization.
"Make a to-do list for the coming week. Break large tasks into small, achievable ones. This will help avoid feeling overwhelmed and increase productivity. If possible, ask colleagues or your manager for a short postponement on some projects to give yourself time to adapt. Remember that your productivity will grow as you return to your usual rhythm. Don’t forget to take breaks during work. Short breaks will help maintain concentration and prevent burnout," he said.
In the opinion of the head physician of Clinical Psychiatric Hospital No. 1 of Nizhny Novgorod, post-holiday stress may be caused not only by returning to work, but also by the need to quickly put the home in order, deal with accumulated tasks and restore social connections.
"Find effective ways to relieve stress: this could be reading a book, listening to music, meditating, walking in nature or spending time with loved ones. It is important to learn to recognize the signs of stress and take timely measures to reduce it," he emphasized.
The main secret to successfully returning to workdays is patience and self-compassion.
"Be patient with yourself. Recovery after a long vacation is a process that takes time. Do not scold yourself for feeling tired or for not being able to immediately return to previous productivity. Allow yourself to adapt gradually; enjoy each small step on the way back to normal," the psychiatrist concluded.
