Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and China held about 50 joint events in 2025, covering the fields of education, tourism, cultural exchange and other areas. The results of the region’s cooperation with the People’s Republic of China were summed up at the Ministry of International and Interregional Relations of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

The Minister of International and Interregional Relations of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Olga Guseva, noted that China is a reliable strategic partner of our region.

“Cooperation between Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and China is systemic and strategic in nature. As early as 1896, at the All-Russian Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod, the Chinese pavilion became a symbol of deep mutual respect and interest between us. Today China continues to remain a reliable strategic partner of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, traditionally ranking among the top three key trade and economic counterparties of the region. Over the past 15 years, trade turnover with China has increased 18-fold, which underscores the steady growth and development of our relations,” said the Minister of International and Interregional Relations of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Olga Guseva.

According to the minister, interregional cooperation with China is developing most actively in the “Volga–Yangtze” format. To date, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast cooperates with six regions of the PRC: the provinces of Anhui, Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi and the centrally administered city of Chongqing.

In addition, Nizhny Novgorod municipalities have actively engaged in work with China. In 2025, the Voznesensky Municipal District gained two sister cities in China — the city of Yining and Changfeng County of the city of Hefei.

One of the significant events of the year was the visit of a delegation from the People’s Republic of China headed by a member of the Politburo, Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, Chen Wenqing. During the meeting with the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Volga Federal District, Igor Komarov, and Governor Gleb Nikitin, the parties discussed issues of mutually beneficial cooperation in trade, education and the humanitarian sphere.

In 2025 special attention was paid to strengthening educational ties. Nizhny Novgorod universities actively cooperate with more than 45 Chinese universities, and the region is home to over 100,000 students, of whom about 7,000 are foreign students from 130 countries, including more than 500 students from China.

Cultural and tourist exchanges also received new development: as part of the cross Year of Culture of Russia and China, a concert by foreign students of the M.I. Glinka Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatory took place, which became an important step in strengthening cultural ties.

In addition, in May an advertising and informational tour was held for representatives of the tourism industry from sister cities such as Hefei and Jinan. Participants visited historic cities along the Moscow – Nizhny Novgorod route and took part in the tourism opportunities forum “Opening Nizhny.”

The ministry also noted active development of cooperation in the healthcare sector. On March 25, 2025, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Jiangxi Province. As a result of the interaction, more than 10 events were organized during which issues of implementing joint projects in the field of neonatal surgery, minimally invasive treatment of congenital malformations in newborns, reproductive health, rehabilitation and other areas were discussed.

“I am confident that our cooperation with China will develop, opening new horizons for education, tourism and cultural exchange and many other areas. Together we will be able to achieve even greater successes and strengthen the friendly ties between us,” added Olga Guseva.
