The modernization of the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station will be completed in 2030.

26 December 2025, 15:45 — Society — Work on the large-scale overhaul of the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station will be completed by 2030, pravda-nn.ru reports.

The second phase of modernization is scheduled for 2026. It is planned to reconstruct 61 facilities on the station's premises.

These include four additional primary settling tanks, six secondary settling tanks, seven aeration tanks, a pair of sludge reservoirs for emergency situations, a building for sludge dewatering and drying, and an ultraviolet disinfection station.

Final completion of all construction and technical work is scheduled for 2030. By that time, the purchase of new air purification systems is also planned.

In the first phase, which has already been carried out, five aeration tanks with a total area of 23,000 square meters were refurbished — roughly equivalent to three football fields. In addition, four primary settling tanks were reconstructed, which were covered with stainless steel lids after testing. A total of 50 facilities were modernized.

The wastewater treatment process at the station is organized in several sequential stages.

First, large debris is removed in the screening building, then sand is separated in the grit chambers. At the next stage — in the primary settling tanks — suspended particles settle, and the wastewater becomes enriched with easily degradable organic matter. This is necessary to activate biological processes and for thorough removal of nitrogen and phosphorus.

The wastewater then goes to aeration tanks, where specialized microorganisms, in the presence of oxygen, break down organic pollutants. After that the water settles in secondary settling tanks, is disinfected, and discharged back into the river. In the final stage, the quality of the treated effluent is regularly monitored.

In the summer of 2025, the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin, informed President Vladimir Putin of the preliminary approval of the application to carry out the second phase of the station's reconstruction as part of the federal "Water of Russia" project of the national "Ecological Well-being" initiative. It was reported that an additional 3.8 billion rubles will be allocated to continue repairs of the aeration station. Overall, 11 billion rubles are planned to be directed to the reconstruction of the facility over the next three years.
