Two Nizhny Novgorod doctors became laureates of the Russian Government Prize in Science and Technology for 2025. Vladimir Zagaynov and Nikolai Kiselev were part of the team that developed a new, truly effective approach to treating hepatic alveococcosis, reports chief editor of MIA "Stacionar-press" Alexey Nikonov.
The prize was presented by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
Alveococcosis was long considered practically a death sentence: surgical treatment was difficult and rarely produced good results. But a group of doctors and scientists led by surgeon Sergey Voskanian managed to change the treatment approach. Their method gives patients a real chance of recovery.
Vladimir Zagaynov is a professor, head of the PIMU department and the chief transplant surgeon of the Nizhny Novgorod region. He led the region's first kidney transplant operation at the Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital. Nikolai Kiselev heads the abdominal oncology and interventional radiology department at the regional cancer dispensary.
Earlier it was reported that in the Vorotynsky district doctors revived an athlete after cardiac arrest.
