More than 5,900 hectares of new forests have been created in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
The autumn forest-cultivation season has ended in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, during which more than 2,000 hectares of forest were restored. In total this year, over 5,900 hectares of new forests have been created in the region, the regional Ministry of Forestry reported. All activities for creating and preserving the region’s forests were carried out as part of the implementation of the federal project "Forest Conservation", which is part of the national project "Environmental Well-Being".
"This year new forests have been created on an area of almost 6,000 hectares, which is 118% of the planned target; of these, 5,400 hectares were restored artificially and 500 hectares by combined methods. Exceeding the plan is not just a statistical record, but an investment in the environmental well-being of the region, an increase in the resilience of the forest economy and the fulfillment of the country’s strategic objectives," noted Roman Vorobyov, Minister of Forestry and Protection of Wildlife Objects of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
Meanwhile, 2,300 hectares of forests were restored using planting material with a closed root system. It has a number of advantages: the plants retain their root system during transportation, adapt more quickly to new soil and climatic conditions, and show high survival rates.
For creating forest stands in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, planting material of coniferous tree species — spruce and pine — grown at the modern selection and seed-production complex "Semenovsky Special Seed Forestry Complex", a subordinate institution of the regional Ministry of Forestry, is used. The enterprise carries out the full cycle of work — from harvesting, processing and storing forest plant seeds to producing planting material.
At present, forest users of forest plots and state institutions have also fully completed agrotechnical and silvicultural maintenance of the created forests on an area of more than 36,800 hectares.
Soil preparation on an area of more than 1,000 hectares has already been carried out for forest restoration in 2026.
Recall that from 2025, by order of President Vladimir Putin, the national project "Environmental Well-Being" began to operate in Russia, carrying out the tasks previously provided for in the national project "Ecology". The new national project envisages care for the environment and improving its comfort for people’s lives. The national project includes six federal projects: "General Cleanup", "Water of Russia", "Conservation of Biodiversity and Development of Ecological Tourism", "Forest Conservation", "Circular Economy", and "Clean Air".
